Current Job Title: Program Manager
Current Job Description: I coordinate and manage corporate events from beginning design phases to logistical management through event completion.
- How long have you been at your current job? 2.5 years
- Please list some previous experience you feel has helped you prepare for a career in the events industry? My summer internship with RVE was a wonderful experience and opened up the doors to corporate events which at the time was a whole new world for me.
What’s your favorite thing about the event industry?
I don’t know any event planner who wouldn’t say the collaboration and end result of an event. No planner is ever doing this on their own, and I love love love how supportive and collaborative our local events community is.
Why did you join ILEA?
I was new to Austin and really needed the exposure to get to know our events community, and ILEA has been a wonderful organization and resource!
What have you enjoyed the most about ILEA?
Everyone, even competitors, are able to support each other and uplift one another in order to see Austin succeed as an event destination. I’m constantly moved by the positivity and encouragement being offered by one another and I think it speaks volumes for the culture of our city in general. We’re true leaders in our nation!
Best advice you have for others or have been given?
It’s not a competition! Lean on each other for education and support. We’re always so much more successful together than we are on our own. Also, for any event professional, invest in some comfortable onsite shoes and treat yourself to vacations when you can ☺ We work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment and it’s important to take care of yourself. Happy event professional = happy events!
Favorite thing to do when you are not working?
I used to always want to go-go-go on the weekends but as I’ve gotten older and I invest my energy into my job, I love to take my time off to really unwind and relax. I find that it really helps me power back up on Monday morning to service my clients as best as possible and it keeps me energized and motivated. You can often find me at Black Swan Yoga or on the Town Lake Hike & Bike Trail – or at Picnick grabbing some Matcha and lunch ☺
Most Recent Vacation Spot?
Cabo, Mexico and it was one of the most amazing vacations I’ve ever had. I napped on the beach for about 5 days straight and it was incredible.
Favorite Austin Experience?
Austin City Limits Music Festival has to be one of my favorites just because I think it’s so much different than music festivals in other cities and it’s truly a cultural event that we can be proud of. You can go with a group of friends or take your family – there is something for everyone. It’s very inclusive.
Favorite Austin Restaurant/Hang out spot? Favorite food?
I already said this but Picnik on Burnet is my favorite in Austin. I believe in their mission and their food values, and their menu is to-die-for.
Any mentors or people who inspire you, you look up to – industry or non-industry?
Of course Cindy Lo has always been an inspiration and someone I always wanted to work for, not just as an event professional but as a working professional in general. She leads by example and I’ve learned so much from her.
NOW FOR THE FUN QUESTIONS –
What is the neatest place you have ever visited? Hmm Costa Rica or Cabo – pretty “basic” I guess you could say, but hey, I’m a sucker for good tacos and music!
If you won a million dollars, what is the first thing you would buy? A house!
Who / What is your dream client or event? Superbowl Half Time Show ☺
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’ve always wanted to go to France since I studied French for so many years, but I also have my eye all over Canada right now. Such a beautiful country.
What is a unique fact about you? I cook my family’s Thanksgiving meal every year, and of course all from scratch down to the dinner rolls and pie crusts ☺ It’s my favorite.
What is the weirdest place / person you have ever done an event or request for? We had an event once where we had to assign one person on our team to be solely responsible for Fire Ant Duty. Literally her role for the entire night was to walk through the park and mark any fire ants she spotted so guests wouldn’t step in them.
